Dear Graduate Community,

The recent ruthless killings of African Americans across the country—including George Floyd, Michael Ramos, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson—have led to protests and unrest across America in response to police brutality and our nation’s continued legacy of racism.

I feel the impact of these events on our community here in Austin, the State of Texas and our nation. The pain of these sufferings is palpable and it is upon all of us to combat racism and violence and seek reform. I am encouraged by the strength and determination of those working to bring about positive change in our communities. I hope all of you will join all of us in the Graduate School in denouncing brutality and injustice, and supporting those who are victims of systemic racism and discrimination.

Remain strong and take care.

MARK J. T. SMITH

Dean of the Graduate School
Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs
