Brandy Routh, a fourth-year Neuroscience Ph.D. candidate, was named as one of three winners of the 2024 inter-university Empower Your Pitch competition this summer. The event featured participants from the Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University and The University of Texas at Austin.

Harrington Fellowship Enables Ph.D. Candidate to Address Child Hunger

Mercy Sosanya (Nutritional Sciences Ph.D., ’24) spent nearly a decade of her life exploring the issue of nutrition in her home country of Nigeria before beginning her doctoral program at UT Austin. With the help of the Harrington Dissertation Fellowship, she developed a body of research aimed at addressing this complex problem.

Faith Deckard, a recent sociology doctoral graduate, has focused her research on better understanding how people and their families navigate the criminal legal system and its aftermath. Winner of the 2024 Granof Award, she examines how the cash bail system entangles not just individuals but also families in a complicated economic and social system of obligation, debt and punishment.

LLILAS Seed Grant Funds Ecology and Culture Seminar in Xalapa, Mexico

A four-day symposium took place recently in Xalapa, Mexico, focusing on the interrelationship between ecology and culture in the country’s vibrant Huasteca region, thanks to a $10,000 grant. The UT organizers of the project are Robin Moore, professor of ethnomusicology, and graduate student JA Strub, both at the Butler School of Music.

2024-25 UT Chevron Energy Graduate Fellows Awards

The Energy Institute at the University of Texas at Austin is pleased to announce the recipients of the Chevron Energy Graduate Fellowship Endowment. Made possible by a gift from Chevron, the program supports the work of outstanding graduate students conducting energy systems research. Eight graduate students have been selected to receive awards for the 2024-25 academic year.

UT Grad Student Among Those Awarded the 2024-2025 Rome Prize

The American Academy in Rome recently announced the winners of the 2024–2025 Rome Prize, which includes a Ph.D. Candidate from UT Austin. The Rome Prize was awarded to 31 American artists and scholars, who will each receive a stipend, workspace and room and board for five to ten months at the Academy’s eleven-acre campus in Rome, starting this September.
