International Student Maximum Weekly Scheduled Hours
Long Semester (Fall/Spring) Policy
Appointments during the long semesters for International students (F-1/J-1) are limited to 20 hours/week unless the student gets an approved exception from ISSS to work over the capped amount. Refer to the ISSS Quick links to find visa specific options on how to make a request.
All other immigration student statuses should check with ISSS to confirm that the Graduate School’s Maximum Weekly Scheduled Hours applies with any additional restrictions.
Summer Semester Policy
International students (F-1/J-1) are only limited to 20 hours/week if the summer semester is the first semester in a graduate program. Otherwise, International students will follow the Graduate School’s Maximum Weekly Scheduled Hours Summer semester policy.
Academic Calendar Semester Breaks
International students will follow the Graduate School’s Academic Calendar Semester Breaks policy unless restricted by the student’s specific immigrant status.
Appointments during the academic break periods in the University’s academic calendar may not exceed 40 hours per week. These defined break periods are as follows:
- Fall Break: Starts on the Saturday before the week of Thanksgiving break and ends on the Sunday before classes resume.
- Winter Break : Starts on the first day after the official graduation date in December, and ends on the day before the first day of classes in the Spring semester.
- Spring Break: Starts on the Saturday before the week of spring break and ends on the Sunday before classes resume.
- Summer Break I: Starts on the first day after the official graduation date in May and ends on the day before summer classes start.
- Summer Break II: Starts on the first day after the official graduation date in August and ends on the day before the first day of classes in the Fall semester.
International Teaching Assistants (ITA) English Certification
To be eligible for a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Assistant Instructor (AI) appointment, non-native speakers of English must receive ITA English Certification. Refer to the Texas Global English Language Center for detailed information.
