Dear Graduate Students:

Today marks the start of National Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week, a celebration honoring the impact and value of graduate and professional students on college campuses and beyond. In honor of the occasion, I wanted to take a moment to recognize your outstanding contributions as graduate students at The University of Texas at Austin.

As graduate students, you are a vital part of the university’s teaching and research mission. The countless hours you spend working in labs helps make scientific discoveries at the university possible. The time you spend grading papers and answering emails helps our undergraduates succeed and earn their degrees. Your creative endeavors provide a novel lens on the world around us. Simply put, your research, scholarship and creativity will lead to the breakthroughs of tomorrow—unlocking innovations, fueling economic development and making vital cultural contributions.

Ultimately, your work will enrich society and help make the world a better place.

This year, the Graduate Student Assembly, the Graduate School and Texas Career Engagement have partnered to develop a series of events celebrating our graduate students. We would like to invite you to participate in events taking place during National Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week. A complete list of events is available on the Graduate School website.

The first event is an open house with complimentary lunch for graduate students today, April 1 at 11:30 a.m. in our Graduate School offices, Main 101. I hope you will join members of the Graduate School to meet your fellow graduate students while enjoying sandwiches and drinks. In addition to lunch, there will be door prizes donated in honor of graduate students by campus-area businesses—including BookPeople, Texas French Bread, Snarf’s Sandwiches, Raising Canes, Amy's Ice Cream and Foxtrot. If you are unable to attend, I hope you will take part in other activities this week.

I am proud to serve graduate students at the university and to see firsthand your invaluable contributions to our campus and beyond—I can’t wait to see what you do next.

Sincerely,
SARAH ADES, Ph.D.
