Summer Health Insurance Options for Graduate Students

Graduate students at the university have a range of needs and options for summer health insurance, depending on their employment and enrollment status. Graduate students can learn more about summer insurance options based on their employment status. Summer UT Select (employer provided) Eligibility

Actions you need to take

20-30 hour TA/AI employed from 1/16 – 5/31 AND you are returning to benefits-eligible employment in the 2020 Fall Semester

Eligible for UT Select for the entirety of the 6/1-8/31 Summer Semester

None

Split appointment for the 2020 Spring Semester (5-10 hour TA/AI and 10-20 hour GRA) AND you are returning to benefits eligible employment in the 2020 Fall Semester

Eligible for UT Select for the entirety of the 6/1-8/31 Summer Semester

None

20-30 hour GRA employed from 1/16 – 5/31

ONLY ELIGIBLE for UT Select while actively employed as a 20- hour GRA/TA/AI/GA assignment for the entirety of the 6/1 – 8/31 Summer Semester

If you will not have employment, enroll in Academic Blue student health insurance by 6/15

20-30 hour TA/AI employed from 1/16 – 5/31 AND you are not returning to benefits eligible employment in the 2020 Fall Semester because you received a fellowship award etc..

UT Select Insurance will end on 5/31/2020. UT Select insurance eligibility is also driven by summer TA/AI employment:

  • Session 1 TA – UT Select insurance will end on 7/31
  • Nine-Week TA - UT Select insurance will end on 7/31
  • 12-Week TA - UT Select insurance will end on 8/31

If you are employed as a Session 2 TA ONLY, your employer-provided insurance will end on 5/31/2020. You should enroll in Academic Blue student health insurance by 6/15, the federal ACA Market place or another source of insurance (i.e. parent’s employer if under the age of 26). After UT Select insurance ends, you will be able to enroll in Academic Blue because this is considered a qualified change of status event.

20-30 hour TA/AI employed from 1/16 – 5/31 AND you are still interviewing for 2020 Fall TA positions

You should remain eligible for UT Select from 6/1-8/31

No Employment; however, I’m on a Graduate Student Fellowship holder enrolled in UT Select and my fellowship ends on 5/31/2020

If you will be an enrolled student in the 2020 Fall Semester, enroll in Academic Blue. If you are graduating, review insurance plan options on the federal ACA Marketplace. If are enrolled in UT Select, UT Select COBRA benefits are not extended to fellowship holders because they are not considered university employees.
