99-Hour Rule

Graduate students at The University of Texas at Austin with more than 99 doctoral hours may be required to pay nonresident tuition—a provision known as the “99-Hour Rule.”

Most students who qualify for resident tuition will not be affected by the 99-Hour Rule. A student can study at the university full-time for seven academic years—including summers—before earning enough credit to be subject to the rule.

Even students enrolled for more than seven years may be eligible for a programmatic or individual exemption from the rule.
